[編輯] Yu Junwei(盂峻瑋)
I was born and grew up in Wanghua (Mangka), Taipei city. But something happened when I was nine; that is my father was transferred to England because of his job and brought the whole family with him. As a result, I had a mixed education in UK until twelve when I came back to Taiwan continuing my high school and university studies. After finishing the compulsory military service, I went to England to pursue Masters and PhD degrees.
I have followed Taiwanese national teams since I was seven. Like many fellow islanders, I watched live or delayed LLB tournament games on television as I sipped instant noodles late at nights. I think the first game that ever came into my mind was the 1982 LLB Asian qualifier, in which Puzi played Japanese and South Korea for the birth to Williamsport. Puzi’s slugger was a guy named Chen Jindong, who was massive, already stood at five foot seven. Unfortunately he never grew one inch after that and gradually disappeared from baseball, a common and strange phenomena which will be thoroughly discussed in the forthcoming book Playing in Isolation: A History of Baseball in Taiwan. In this book, while talking about the proud history of Taiwanese baseball, a lot of dark sides will also be explored.
Currently I am an assistant professor in the Department of Recreation and Sport Management at Shu Te University in Gaoxiong, Taiwan. Right now I am teaching some subjects that are irrelevant to sports, for example, Economics and Recreational Regulations. I think that’s life in Taiwan’s technological university because the department asks you to teach many subjects that may not be your specialty. After completing the book on Taiwanese baseball, I would like to write a soccer history of Republic of China, which dominated Asia from 1940s to 1960s. I hope I could enter a research institution in the foreseeable future that allows me to have time to conduct this project.
I am a lifelong Houston Astros fan, thanks to Mike Scott, whose divisional title-clinching no-hitter on the last day against the Giants in 1986 was one of my most memorable moments. When it comes to Taiwanese baseball, Weichuan Dragons had been my favorite team since 1982, but they disbanded the club in 1999 when the league was plagued with gambling and match-fixing scandals. I also watch English premiership football, in which I root for Tottenham Hotspur since 1984 after an epic UEFA cup final decided on penalty shootout. Finally, I support Middlesex in cricket because of Mike Gatting.
