球隊於2007年11月上旬，正式更名為「Tampa Bay Rays」，詞彙具有光芒和魟魚的意思，但球隊主要商標改為光芒的圖案，球隊表示希望新的意思就是要朝向光芒的涵意為主，另外還保有傳統的魟魚的味道。球衣的正面採用光芒的圖案，球衣側面的臂章繡有傳統魟魚的造型，此乃代表正面圖案的涵義為主，側面圖案的涵義為副的新隊名。採訪大聯盟的華文媒體記者向坦帕灣光芒隊的公關部門尋求一個明確的中文譯名，獲得回答是「在英文裡，他們是不介意球迷怎麼解讀；但真的需要翻譯時，他們希望譯法往光的方向走」[1][2]。
